Welcome to the Helios Trust Online
Dear Helios patients, friends and supporters,
As the present Chair of your Helios Trust, I would like to thank everyone for your loyal support of the Helios Trust and the Helios Medical Centre over the years. Since it was first opened by Drs Andrew Maendl and Peter Gruenewald, on the 2nd of February 1998, the Helios Medical Centre together with the Helios Trust has aimed to provide NHS healthcare to the community of Bristol and its surrounding areas, as well as using anthroposophical medicine and therapies within an NHS practice. It has been your enthusiasm, fundraising and many other contributions, as well as our doctors’ and therapists’ tireless efforts, that have made this possible.
With the retirement of Dr Frank Mulder on 31. March 2021, the running of the Helios Medical Centre was taken on by the Mendip Vale Medical Group. I realise that it has come as a shock to be told by the Mendip Vale Medical Group that the NHS part of the practice will now be closing on 31st March 2022. Unfortunately, we found that they were unable to continue with the provision of anthroposophical medicine and therapies at the Helios Medical Centre. The Helios Trust owns the building freehold at 17 Stoke Hill but is not the NHS medical contractor. This means, regrettably, that the Helios Trust would not have been able to pursue its legal, charitable aims if it had continued to rent the building to the Mendip Vale Medical Group.
The beauty of 17 Stoke Hill, especially its underlying sense of peace and tranquillity, has made it an ideal space for anthroposophical medicine and therapies. The trustees of the Helios Trust are therefore looking at ways to be able to continue to use 17 Stoke Hill to provide the benefits of anthroposophical healthcare and other related anthroposophical initiatives. We have been actively exploring options for enabling that aim and will be making further announcements regarding the future of the Helios Trust and 17 Stoke Hill in due course.
We want to thank you all again for your support and will keep you updated as soon as our new direction is clear.
Yours most sincerely,
Professor Gene Feder MD FRCGP OBE
